SB220 - Hate Crimes
POSITION
Oppose
Senate Roll Call #: 137
This Hate Crimes Bill (Bias Crimes) allows courts to increase sentencing against offenders based on their perceptions of what the assailant was thinking about the victim at the time a crime was committed. These protections are only provided to certain protected classes of people in this bill. For instance, if a person of color were to attack a white male because of his bias against white males, then there would be no enhanced sentencing. This is creates unequal protections of the law, a violation of the 14th Amendment.
